Droughtman's Challenge

Droughtman's Challenge Entry Ticket


BACKGROUND

On the Niiman, the 10th day of Fashanos, in the year 5111 Droughtman issued a challenge to one and all to enter his maze and to find a White Door. Of course the challenge was not that simple. There would be obstacles in the form of doors; levers and ropes to pull that could provide great wealth or great pain; Blockers whose function would be to hinder us at ever turn; and of course nine other competitors within the maze. My initial reaction was not overly enthusiastic. Mazes are not my thing. I can hardly find my way out of the pub on a Feastday. How could a navigate a maze? However we were told told that great rewards would await all participants, just for turning up. An better still, amazing rewards would await the competitor who won the final round. Armed with this information, how could pass up a challenge. So I purchased my ticket and waited for my time in the arena.

These pages record three aspects of my participation within the games:


Droughtman

You see Maze Master Droughtman.
He appears to be a Dwarf.
He is shorter than average and appears to be very young. He has brooding grey eyes and copper skin. He has very long, braided blue-black hair with a white streak running through it. He has a square-jawed face, a hooked nose and a long braided beard.
He is in good shape.
He is holding a polished golvern forging-hammer in his right hand.
He is wearing a round otter fur cap, a crystal amulet, a fringed doeskin vest embroidered with an elaborate maze-like pattern in shimmering silver thread, some ivory-rimmed spectacles with incredibly thick lenses, a grey leather map case embossed with the symbol for eternity, a bristly boarhide pack, some thick sheepskin-lined leathers, a supple bronze leather weapon loop with a drakar hammer hanging from it, a fang-fringed bronze leather pouch, some shaggy bearskin leggings, and a pair of fur-lined boots.



Maze Areas

Outer Area

[Droughtman's Maze, Opal Lounge]
The lighting here is dim, but not enough to obscure the opalescent wallpaper. Couches and upholstered chairs in every shade of the rainbow are scattered around the room in groups, surrounding tables set with food. A long mahogany bar occupies one wall, which is hung with a mirror that only magnifies the maelstrom of color in the room. One has to wonder if the decor is an attempt at opulence, or if it is intended to induce patrons to drink more, just to blunt their senses. You also see a winners placard, a large D-shaped door, a betting booth and an odds and rules sign.

Betting Rules:
Bets may be placed on which contestant will be the first to complete the challenge!
All bets must be at least 1,000 silvers and no more than 1,000,000 silvers. A 10% accounting fee will go to the house for each bet placed. You may place up to seven bets on one contestant or multiple contestants up until a winner is declared. You may also bet on more than one contestant.
Odds will begin at 2:1 and will decrease as more bets are placed on a particular contestant.
You MUST be present in the Opal Lounge, the Observation Deck, or one of the spectator rooms at the time the challenge is won to be paid your winnings. Notes must be held in the right hand while betting. Bets CANNOT be cancelled once placed.
Bets will only be accepted within the first 30 minutes of each match! Starting odds are now based on how many valid contestants are able to win the match and may change from match to match!

The booth itself is a simple, three-sided construction of mahogany, with an odds and rules sign hanging on its front. Behind the counter, the bookie works quickly and efficiently, taking bets, updating the odds, and making small talk with the patrons.

Observation Decks

{As you wander round you see the following doors to the observation decks - doors from east to west}

You also see a doorway framed with hundreds of tiny amethysts.

Regally stiff, this room bears no knick-knacks or superfluous decoration. Standing on each side of a large observation window are two pedestals on which two plain oil lamps glow brightly. A large solitary purple couch sits at the center of the room between two pale purple marble tables, offering a comfortable place for those might wish to relax and WATCH the ongoing show. You also see a doorway framed with hundreds of tiny sapphires.

A large sapphire hangs from the ceiling and rotates slowly, refracting and reflecting the light from surrounding oil lamps so that the room is awash in various shades of blue. Blue velvet chairs are arranged in various locations around the room, some are near a large window for those who might wish to relax and WATCH the ongoing show, and some are set near small ironwood tables set with small blue votive candleholders. You also see a winners placard, an odds and rules sign and a scoring display. Obvious exits: out

You also see a doorway framed with hundreds of tiny emeralds

Twining around the room, iron ivy vines have been arranged with dark green candles resting precariously upon upturned leaves. Small wooden trunks topped with emerald green cushions offer firm but comfortable seating to allow spectators to WATCH the ongoing show. Upon the wall is a wide window bordered with green-tinted stained glass panels and framed with a soft green moss, which fills the room with a pleasant, earthy aroma. Stretching the length of one wall, a large heart-shaped window framed by sheer red curtains looks down on the maze. Tiered redwood tables topped by a multitude of lit red candles are scattered throughout the room. Large floor cushions lie around the room to give comfort to those spectators who might wish to relax and WATCH the ongoing show. You also see a winners placard, an odds and rules sign and a scoring display. Obvious exits: out

You also see a doorway framed with hundreds of tiny diamonds

White marble walls speckled with tiny diamonds enclose a formidable sitting room. Hanging from the ceiling, a large crystal chandelier bears an array of lit candles, giving off a glorious light reflected through the crystals. Nestled against the far wall is a plump white sofa, offering comfortable seating to WATCH the ongoing show through the large window on the opposite wall. You also see a winners placard, an odds and rules sign and a scoring display. Obvious exits: out

You also see a doorway framed with hundreds of tiny black pearls.

Dangling from the low ceiling, a black crystal chandelier bearing carved candles illuminates the room. Sheer curtains, tied neatly at each side with satin ribbons, frame a slightly tinted window that offers a great view for those who wish to WATCH the events below. Plush black silk pillows surround a deep black ebonwood table in the center of the room. You also see a winners placard, an odds and rules sign and a scoring display. Obvious exits: out

You also see a doorway framed with hundreds of tiny moonstones.

Iridescent walls surround a large circular milky-quartz table set in the center of the moonstone-tiled floor. One entire wall has been replaced with a large window with opaque designs bordering the edges like frost on a winter-chilled pane. Simple bentwood silver birch chairs are turned at an angle to the window, to permit both conversation and a clear view for those who wish to WATCH the ongoing show. Resting in each corner of this vibrant room are wicker tables laden with yellow and orange candles in various sizes. Painted upon the wall opposite the observation window is a bright mural of a rising sun. Scattered throughout the room are some large wicker chairs, each topped with a plush orange or yellow cushion, which provide seating for spectators to WATCH the ongoing show. Light blue walls, expertly painted with softly blended swirls of white and blue, give the impression of a room immersed in a soft, cool mist. Aquamarine-tinted cut-crystal lamps hang from the walls. Plush sky-blue sofas are arranged in staggered rows and elevated on risers to provide each seated spectator with a clear view out of a large oval window for those who wish to WATCH the show. You also see a winners placard, an odds and rules sign and a scoring display. Obvious exits: out

Chairs with cushions in lemon or lime-green are set about the room, each with its own yellow-and-green-striped glass table. Splotches of brilliant yellow and splatters of light green paint decorate the walls in abstract patterns. The light aroma of fresh vanilla drifts from incense holders placed evenly below the observation window that offers a clear view for those to WATCH the events below. Entrance Box

[Droughtman's Maze, Entrance Box]
The room appears to be devoid of light, sound, or even the essence of existence itself. Dark voids and constantly moving shadows combine with the crunch of fine gravel under foot. A steady wind pushes back at all who pass, as though warning would-be contestants that they may wish to pray to their favored patron before venturing further. A black marble building lies in the center of this nothingness, with a single doorway offering the only possible way to more inviting surroundings. You also see a weapons rack with some stuff on it, an armor stand with some stuff on it and a scoring display. Obvious exits: none

In the heavy backpack you see a small white pill, a small white pill, a small white pill, a small white pill, a small white pill, a silvered glacial crystal wand, some acantha leaf, some acantha leaf, some acantha leaf and a crystal amulet.

On the weapons rack you see a steel battle axe, a steel troll-claw, a steel dagger, a steel halberd, a steel cudgel, a steel dagger, a steel hook-knife, a steel troll-claw, a wood runestaff, a steel battle axe, a steel military pick, a steel halberd, a steel falchion, a steel mace, a steel cudgel, a steel handaxe, a wood composite bow and a bundle of arrows.

On the armor stand you see some cloth robes, a steel shield, some cloth robes, some full leather, some double leather, some steel brigandine armor, a steel chain hauberk and some steel full plate.

[Maze, Recovery Room]
The noise from the cheering spectators, although muffled, can still be heard echoing off the walls of this comfortably cooled room. You also see a scoring display and a golden door.
Obvious exits: none

[Maze, Winner's Circle]
The muffled noise from cheering spectators mix with a celebratory tune and a lively march which can be heard faintly from an unknown source, almost as if a complete orchestra were nearby, saluting not only the winner, but the other contestants as well. You also see a shimmering silver oval, a glittering heap of treasure, a scoring display and a winners placard.

Blockers's Area

[Maze, Blockers' Lounge]
The room appears to be devoid of any regular light source, but shadows and light do a flickering dance as if to honor those who pass through. A fine gravel crunches underfoot with each step, while a chilly wind pushes steadily by. The one object regularly visible is a black marble building which lies in the center of the expanse, a single doorway offering the only way to what may be more inviting surroundings. You also see a vultite armor stand with some stuff on it, a vultite weapons rack with some stuff on it and a scoring display.
