Itinerary for Day 3 according to the brochure.
Day 3: Rome to Sorrento
A morning visit to the Castelli Romani, or 'castles of Rome', once the country retreat of wealthy Romans, is followed by a trip to the village of Castel Gandolfo, home of the Pope's summer residence. We then head to Sorrento, one of Italy’s best holiday resorts, with its pretty marina, relaxed atmosphere and fantastic shopping for four nights at the 3* Hotel Tirennia (or similar). The hotel also offers a wonderful rooftop terrace where you can relax with a refreshing drink and soak up the sunshine.
Personal Commentary
I awoke with an amazing amount of mosquito bites on my arms, ankles and legs. I have never suffered from such bites that have been so painful..
On this day we met Jenny, Peter, Stan and Maria. We drove towards Sorrento,
stopping first Castel Gandolfo. This is a small Italian town in Lazio that occupies a height overlooking Lake Albano about 30 km south-east of Rome, on the Alban Hills. It is best known as the summer residence of the Pope.
The summer residence was guarded by Swiss Guards. I had a walk around the town
with Jabeen and our tour guide gave us time to see some of the sights and to
walk leisurely about. The views of Lake Albano were wonderful. An Italian
man tried to converse with me, but unfortunately with his lack of English and my
limited Italian, we were both left frustrated. I will never know whether he was
trying to invite me to meet the pope or just to tell me to get out of town!
We drove past Napoli to
Sorrento. The drive itself was hairy, with a sheer drop to one side. It was also
a very picturesque view. During one of the stopovers we also introduced
ourselves to Clive and Lucella.
The hotel in Sorrento was beautiful and within walking distance from the sea. We were left to our own devices in Sorrento and Jabeen and I decided to take a tour. We got onto a tour bus and travelled slowly in hot conditions around the area. We returned to the hotel, had an evening meal and then went to watch the sunset.
