personal - GemStone IV interview with cemb

Interview with Cemb Chimera

Interview held on Feastday, day 23 of the month Lormesta in the year 5110

[Skinny Thrak Table]
The table edges here are sharply beveled, as though someone has been whittling away at them. Etched into the table top are some of the most emaciated thraks you have ever seen. Their sides draw in together at the waist, giving them a waspish look.
Also here: Cemb
Obvious exits: out

Cemb pulls out a chair and seats himself at the table.

You softly say, "Thanks for agreeing to be interviewed."

Cemb says, "No problem, should be fun."

You softly say, "Darn I should have brought some ale. Best way to get warriors to talk."

You chuckle.

Cemb says, "I don't really drink, so it's fine."

You softly say, "Oh well. Will have to be thumb screws in your case then"

Cemb chuckles.

You softly say, "Just 12 questions - the idea is for you to record information about yourself. In the year 5030 when people say 'Who is Cemb' then there will be a record."

Cemb starts chuckling at you!

Cemb nods to you.

You softly say, "Ok first question. Full name and - only if you wish - how many times have you visited the trainer. The last part is not necessary."

Cemb says, "Cemb Chimera, the Godslayer, 84 trainings, almost 85."

You turn to Cemb and cheer!

You mutter old_fart.

Cemb says, "Actually, depending on who you ask, Sir Cemb Chimera the Godslayer."

You softly say, "Sounds intriguing."

You softly say, "Ok question two. How long have you wandered the lands?"

Cemb says, "Since 92 or 93...How long is that?"

Cemb scratches his head.

(Bremerial counts on her fingers)

Cemb asks, "17 or 18 years?"

Cemb nods.

You softly say, "Not many interviewed from then so far. Most seem to be from year 96. So I am honored."

You beam happily at Cemb!

Cemb says, "I believe, along with Cinabar, I'm the oldest that has trained that was of Lord age in the ice age...but I could be wrong. Cinbar caught up to me in my recent absense."

Cemb chuckles.

You grin at Cemb.

You softly say, "Will have to grab Cinabar at some time then. Bet you two have some great iceage tales."

You softly say, "Ok third question. What hunting style do you opt for?"

Cemb says, "I'm actually retraining right now..I've been concentrating on fighting styles to hunt in the bowels."

Speaking softly to Cemb, you ask, "How's the retraining going? And in what way are you retraining?"

Cemb says, "Well. I had trouble inially legging elementals and making them fall so they didn't crush me, even with a claid. It wasn't 100% that I would get a leg, and I was parry tagging them. If I missed the leg, they would come around and wollop me."

You furrow up your face and wince.

Cemb says, "So I decided a long time ago to train to stalk and hide as much as I could...to do that I sacrificed all the weapon types I had trained in...traditionally I had been a one hander two hander brawler. I gave it all up just for two handers and stalking/hiding and dodging."

You softly say, "Interesting strategy."

Cemb says, "But I was just doing some tests upon returning, and my maul seemed to do a pretty good job at legging them. So I decided I'll give up the stalking and hiding to get back brawling, because all the new adventurer guild tasks require searching for things barehanded and stuff. Not having brawling is a pain too cause I'm also a voln warrior, and if I ever decide to favor hunt, that's kind of sad that I can't use voln brawling."

You softly ask, "So you are in transition then?"

Cemb nods.

Cemb says, "But probably I won't be done with the transition till may anyway When I'll just be able to do it instantly."

Cemb chuckles.

Cemb says, "I may decide on a different way then though."

You chuckle.

You softly ask, "What percentage of your time do you spend hunting? How do you spend your other time?"

Cemb scratches his head.

Cemb says, "I'm working on the adventurer guild tasks, but they usually make me hunt, not much else. Most quests I was apart of have died down, don't have much interest in what I've heard going on in the lands so far."

Cemb shrugs.

Cemb says, "I'm done with forging, mastered everything I can, so. Not much left besides hunting. I want to reach the cap as my final goal."

Cemb chuckles.

Cemb says, "I was the first forge master in the test forge. I mastered forging twice over."

Cemb chuckles.

Cemb says, "Much of the time I spent was back in the ice age, which was painful as well. Well not ice age, but I was still limited by the ice way.

You softly say, "Next interview question is as follows. What is and/or was your most enjoyable hunting area and why?"

Cemb says, "Hmm."

Cemb says, "That's a hard question over all the years."

Cemb chuckles.

You chuckle.

Cemb scratches his head.

You softly say, "Hard one to think about I know."

You softly say, "We can come back to that question if you want."

Cemb says, "I probably enjoyed ice age hunting in groups like in cavers or maybe wraiths the most..."

You listen carefully to Cemb.

You nod.

Cemb says, "After that, it got tough...around lord age..."

Cemb says, "In the ice age. I had to use ruby amulets that I would charge up on Iorake's mount every week or so. Even parry tagging in kral was tough then."

Cemb scratches his head.

Cemb says, "That was fun in it's own way though. I found this 1x claid on a critter back then that i used..That thing ripped though kral like they were nothing."

Cemb says, "I lost that on titans back then, they could weaponfire."

Cemb sighs.

You furrow up your face and wince.

Cemb says, "God, weaponfire, that was horrible."

Cemb chuckles.

You chuckle.

Cemb says, "The glacier was something to fear back then."

You softly say, "What is parry tagging - for those reading this who might not know."

Cemb says, "Parry tagging is what they call stance dancing now I guess."

You nod to Cemb.

Cemb says, "When you stay in defensive, and wait for the critter to swing, then hope to swing inside of the creatures swing time."

You softly say, "Thanks for the explanation - will be useful."

You softly ask, "Ok - What do you enjoy most about your time in the lands?"

Cemb asks, "Currently?"

Cemb chuckles.

You softly say, "Currently yes."

You nod to Cemb.

Cemb scratches his head.

You softly say, "Generally."

Cemb says, "Not much, probably futzing around trying to perfect hunting an area right now... and relearning about what changes have happened."

You nod to Cemb.

Cemb says, "I haven't been around much in the past few years, so."

You softly say, "This question may be harder."

Speaking softly to Cemb, you ask, "Is there anyone within the lands that you admire? (Any profession) Who and why?"

Cemb scratches his head.

You softly say, "Can be past or present."

You softly say, "May be more than one person."

Cemb chuckles.

You softly say, "Or no one."

You chuckle.

You flash a quick grin.

Cemb says, "I always admired clerics in general, how they save people, as far as specific people..maybe like Krisenfest, or my wife Sieglinde."

Cemb says, "Back in the day especially, there was no fog back then, no easy way to rescue people."

You furrow up your face and wince.

Cemb says, "They really sacrificed and had skills back then."

You softly say, "We've gotten so used to fog, I can't think what life would have been before it."

Cemb chuckles.

You force a grin and laugh nervously.

You softly say, "Frightening."

Cemb nods to you.

Cemb says, "It was."

Cemb says, "Especially since there was no self preservation."

Cemb says, "They had to really be quick, and coordinated if they felt someone die."

You softly say, "Aye - my step grandmother tells me of the dead decaying and their items being abandoned and up for grabs."

You softly say, "Now life back then was really rough."

Cemb says, "A person could easily loose everything if there wasn't someone around."

Cemb nods to you.

Cemb says, "Clerics were real heroes back then."

You nod.

You softly ask, "What has been your best moment in the lands so far?"

You softly say, "If you had to pick one."

Cemb says, "There have been a lot, two or three always stand out for me."

You softly say, "Am interested in them all."

You grin at Cemb.

Cemb says, "My wedding day was great."

Cemb chuckles.

Cemb says, "It was the same day glad games were held."

Cemb says, "I won my class, and the group battle."
You turn to Cemb and cheer!

You softly ask, "Still married?"

Cemb says, "My wife went missing in 95 around the thaw."

You nod.

You softly say, "Sorry to hear that."

Cemb says, "Then got married where Onior is now."

Cemb chuckles.

Cemb says, "Out on the beach."

You grin.

Cemb says, "Was a great day."

Cemb chuckles.

You chuckle.

Cemb taps an engraved laen wedding band that he is wearing.

You beam!

Cemb shows you an engraved laen wedding band, which he is wearing. You see a masterful, glowing etching in the clear mein that shows Koar nobly pledging himself to Lumnis, dressed as a clerical scholar bearing scrolls of wisdom and an elixir of lifegiving.

You softly exclaim, "Wonderful!"

Cemb nods.

Cemb says, "The other main one I always recollect fondly was when Estrion took the castle."

Cemb says, "On the final night, when he was finally dealt with, the landing was under horrible attack."

Cemb says, "I couldn't do much then, I was pretty young."

You softly ask, "Oh excellent - tell me more about that - what do you recall of it?"

Cemb says, "My wife was busy raising the dead, and I couldn't help her much either. I prayed at Lorminstra's temple, there was nothing I could really do. I got the idea though, that Reann/Ronan now though would be the better place to pray for aid, Since he was the direct opposite of Scalu/Sheru."

You nod.

Cemb says, "So I ran out there, past the attackers, and started praying there. I was by myself, so I didn't think I would have much impact, but I pleaded with Ronan to save the town and fight Sheru."

You nod.

Cemb says, "Instead of Ronan answered the walls of the shrine turned to blood..and I felt an evil presence. A voice called me a fool."

Cemb chuckles.

You cross your arms, grasping your shoulders.

Cemb says, "It told me to leave. But I basically said no."

Cemb chuckles.

You chuckle.

You softly say, "Bravery indeed."

Cemb says, "So a lightning bolt came down from the ceiling and struck me dead."

Cemb chuckles.

Cemb says, "In the shrine."

You furrow up your face and wince.

Cemb says, "Before I died though I got a message off to the town via the thought net."

You turn to Cemb and cheer!

Cemb says, "And a bunch of people came running. When they got there, a steed and a Ronan came and purified the shrine, and said never again would Sheru be allowed to defile his shrine."

Cemb says, "And that was the end of the Estrion tale..."

You applaud Cemb.

Cemb says, "I guess later I found out at the same time Starsnuffer had slain Estrion, or perhaps earlier even. I'm still not sure of the turn of events. Apparently Estrion had tried to bring the manifest form of Sheru to the landing. Starsnuffer killed Estrion, and my plea to Ronan dealt with Sheru."

You softly exclaim, "Fantastic tale - think others will find it so too!!!"

Cemb nods.

You softly ask, "So what would you classify or describe as the worst moment in the lands to date?"

You softly ask, "Clearly there have been some memorable moments - are there any of which you dispair or regret or just hated?"

Cemb says, "When the gryphons betrayed the Landing, and accepted full human knighthoods and swore and oath to the human empire."

Cemb nods to you.

You nod to Cemb.

Cemb says, "That was just sickening."

Cemb says, "And I'm still mad about what happened. That was the main reason I stopped being interested in adventuring for the last few years."

You softly ask, "Why the betrayal? Is there any explanation for that?"

Cemb says, "Because their ego's won't allow them to realize their mistake I assume. But I have to admit being partly to blame.... And the society and groupthink of the gryphons is a reason as well."

You listen carefully to Cemb.

You softly ask, "How so?"

Cemb says, "Because the gryphons were created to make knights in part to save the Landing from attack from Hochstib. That's what all the second generation of members of the gryphons joined thinking they wanted to become. That's what they all aspired to."

> Cemb says, "But that wasn't the point of the gryphons really. Welan and I were knighted to keep the Empress and Hochstib from just running up here and attacking the landing straight out. Welan and I being knights held Hocstib at bay for like eight years, during which we prepared the landing. There's no point to a citizen of the landing being a knight of the human empire, which is a corrupted, biggoted realm."

> Cemb says, "Other than for a strategic reason."

You nod.

You softly say, "Politics."

Cemb asks, "Politics?"

Cemb peers quizzically at you.

You softly say, "Plays a part in everything."

Cemb says, "It's not politics. It's that the human empire either see's the landing as savages and easy to take or not. We proved that we're more than a match for anything the human empire has to throw at us. The gryphons could have been a force for freedom. They could have freed Voranvis. Instead they let Solhaven be taken over even."

Cemb says, "It's an embarassment. They should be embarrased for their behaviour and walking around with their meaningless titles."

You softly say, "Clearly strongly held views there."

You nod to Cemb.

Cemb nods to you.

You softly say, "Not known much of the history of the gryphons afore now, or their reason for being originally."

Cemb says, "It was formed because a knight of Jantalar saw Hochstib for the power hungry bigot he was and wanted to save this area. Maldon was a great man."

You softly say, "Very interesting indeed... certainly from my perspective."

You nod to Cemb.

You softly say, "Well... from that question to this. What advice would you give to a new warrior today."

Cemb scratches his head.

Cemb says, "It used to be, become a wizard."

Cemb chuckles.

You giggle.

Cemb says, "But no so much today. Well, with the guild, get tackle, and disarm out of the way before any of the other skills. The more you wait on those the harder they get to do."

You softly say, "Well that in itself is good advice - I wish I had been told that myself."

Cemb nods to you.

Cemb says, "I would say, don't bother with one handers, although bandits are a bit tough without a shield I noticed. I'd also say learn a lot of dodging, and armor, and skills that increase your df"

You softly say, "Ok ready for the next question? Only two to go."

Cemb says, "Sure."

You softly say, "Oki doke. If you had to do it all again, knowing what you now know, would you do anything differently?"

Cemb nods to you.

Cemb says, "Tons as my training shows."

Cemb chuckles.

You chuckle.

Cemb says, "Really though, I was already a legend when the guild opened. A lot couldn't be done about that."

You softly say, "Indeed."

You softly say, "That sort of makes things hard."

Cemb says, "A lot of the stuff that was supposed to help me actually hurt because I had to spend twice as long as a younger warrior had to, even Voln. Voln didn't come in till I was in my 30's. I had to hunt favor in the castle. Basically that was ridiculous."

You furrow up your face and wince.

Cemb says, "Banshees were the only undead over wraiths for a long time. That were huntable at least. The monestary was impossible to hunt for a warrior without spells."

Cemb scratches his head.

Cemb says, "I'm not sure there was much I could do different, other than simply not do it."

Cemb laughs!

You softly say, "Actually that's a good answer in itself."

You grin.

You softly say, "And the final question is just an open question."

You softly ask, "You've been very forthright and have actually provided some great insight in my opinion to historical events. Is there anything you want to add to this interview?"

Cemb chuckles.

You chuckle.

Cemb says, "Well, I think the fiter class is still the funnest of professions for hunting."

You agree with Cemb.

You grunt in affirmation.

You softly say, "Absolutely agree with ye there."

Cemb says, "The simple fact is, we're one of the few professions that doesn't have to spell up before we hunt. I mean we generally, walk up to things and hit them with sharpened sticks. No hiding, or casting, or other junk like that. Just for that alone i think we're the best profession. But as the pains we've suffered, and overcome, I think it's been a pretty neat journey as well"

Cemb chuckles.

You adopt an agreeable expression.

Cemb grins.

You grin at Cemb.

You softly say, "Well that was great."

You softly say, "That concludes the interview..."

You turn to Cemb and cheer!

Cemb nods to you.

You softly exclaim, "I want to thank you for your time and for the responses!!"

You softly say, "Absolutely excellent."

Cemb nods.

Cemb says, "Thanks too."

Cemb scoots his chair back and stands up.

You softly say, "I will publish them very soon."

Cemb grins.

Cemb nods.

Cemb bows.

You mime raising a glass and give a toast to Cemb's health.

Cemb waves.

Cemb grins.

You wave to Cemb.

Cemb just went out.
